Four friends head away from city life in what seems like the beginings of an atypical horror feature setting up camp off the beaten track in the heart of nameless woods. There they discover an abandoned campsite and a mysterious girl. Soon the noises in the woods will become something altogether unnatural
DEAD WOOD is a no budget shot on Digital Video independent movie from the UK and manages to supersede all the inhibitions that those circumstances would suggest. Clever camera work, sharp post-production and editing techniques have elevated this production above the norm than is expected from a situation where a band of friends pool their resources to get the job done. Rather than parade a series of ketchup and corn syrup splatter effects David Bryant, Sebastian Smith and Richard Stiles have elected to squeeze tension and atmosphere out of their script coupled with effective night photography and eerie sound design for a budget that would no doubt only buy coffee for your average film production. Small homages THE BLAIR WITH PROJECT and EVIL DEAD indicate the film making trio are genre fans and display a prowess for good quality film making that should have small distribution outlets banging on their doors for more product only by that time I'm sure they will be on to bigger things. It is not often that the no-budget arena unleashes a feature worthy of a high score but RCR is happy to give DEAD WOOD that much deserved praise.
There's talent here no doubt and RCR recommends you keep an eye out for the DVD on forthcoming release from DNC in the UK and Lionsgate in the US as well as www.menanfilms.com.
