'LOVE HAPPENS'? NOT AFTER YOU STOLE OUR SCRIPT!
According to an article on TMZ, a pair of writers who wrote a screenplay called "The Truth" are now suing NBC Universal, claiming that their screenplay and ideas were stolen to make the Jennifer Anitson and Aaron Eckhart film Love Happens.
The claim stems all the way back from 2006, where screenwriters Greg Crowder and Tony Freitas met with Universal, trying to shop around their script. Crowder claims that after multiple meetings with Scott Bernstein (the Vice President of Production at Universal Studios at that time), Bernstein wanted the script to be rewritten. After saying that they would only rewrite it if they were paid for it, talks fell through. Crowder continued to shop around their script until this year, when another studio expressed concern that they may have stolen the script from the upcoming movie Love Happens, being released by Universal.
The two writers have now filed for an injunction, asking for a judge to block NBC Universal from releasing the film on September 18th (this Friday), or give them a part of the profits. The fun part about this court filing is that apparently the two writers believe that the movie will turn a profit of…(cue the Dr. Evil voice from the Austin Powers series) 100 million dollars!
It will be interesting to see how this will turn out. If it turns out that the script was stolen, chances are good that NBC Universal will pay the two a nice sum to get them to shut up and keep the movie on track for release.
