IS A NEW 'MORTAL KOMBAT' FILM FINALLY ON THE WAY?

As some of you may know, another MORTAL KOMBAT film has been in production for... well, pretty much forever. The sequel/prequel/what-have-you has been in development hell for just about as long as Duke Nukem Forever - if you know your video games, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

While other movie news websites haven't jumped on this, the video gaming news website Destructoid posted a curious article which may give clues as to where the MORTAL KOMBAT franchise may be heading - in the video game world, and possibly for the next movie.

According to papers filed by Warner Brothers (who now owns the Mortal Kombat franchise) on October 26, 2009, Warner Brothers is looking to pursue a trademark on the character Sonya's name. They plan to use it for pretty much everything including video games (shocking!), debit cards, batteries, telephones, etc. Oh yeah, and something called a "motion picture", whatever that is. Interesting how "motion picture films" is listed first, yes?

You can read the 5-page filing at Destructoid

Of course, there could be another reason for this. Within the year, Warner Brothers bought out a good deal of Midway (the company responsible for the Mortal Kombat, Spy Hunter, Wheelman, etc. games) after they went bankrupt. At this point, they could just be going over all of their newly-claimed assets and discovered that none of this sort of paperwork had ever been filed for the Sonya Blade character. After all, isn't it odd how the only paperwork that was filed was for Sonya Blade, and none of the other 50+ Mortal Kombat characters?

We look forward to seeing the developments, if any, to this story. This could be a sign of a new direction for the MORTAL KOMBAT movie franchise (but as Destructoid pointed out, didn't anyone learn from STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI?), or this could simply be nothing. We'll keep you updated when we find out more.
