Gunmen in Mexico murder twelve individuals during Christmas celebration
Twelve individuals were killed and eleven others were injured when gunmen invaded a location in Mexico where a group of young people had gathered for a religious celebration prior to Christmas. According to the Mexican police, the incident occurred.
The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday local time in the town of Salvatierra, which is located in the central region of the state of Guanajuato. The victims were not associated with any criminal organisations, according to the mayor of the area.
Shootouts that result in fatalities are not uncommon in this region; nonetheless, they mostly take place when competing gangs decide to target each other. It was stated by the local media that on Saturday evening, a group of approximately forty persons, the majority of whom were young, had assembled at a ranch that had been converted into a venue for hire.
Las Posadas, which literally translates to “the inns,” is a tradition that is observed between the 16th and 24th of December. During this time, people re-enact the journey that Mary and Joseph took from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
An individual who was present at the celebration disclosed to the sources that the individuals who were armed with firearms had opened fire without discrimination after being confronted by the attendees. He explained that they came to the realisation that they had not been invited, and when they were questioned who they were, they immediately began shooting.
It has not yet been officially determined who the victims of the incident are; however, local newspapers have reported that members of the regional Mexican music band Dinastía Cornejo were among those who found themselves injured.
By posting a request on its social media page, the band requested that individuals donate blood to the nearby hospital. A member of the band’s support staff was also alleged to have perished in the attack, according to reports that have not been corroborated. There were two women among those who were killed. According to reports, the majority of the victims are between the ages of 17 and 35 years old.
Despite the fact that the office of the state prosecutor in Guanajuato is conducting an investigation, there has been no statement made regarding the possible reasons why the gunmen targeted this particular festival.
According to the estimates provided by the government, Guanajuato is the state that experienced the highest number of homicides between the months of January and September of this year.
According to the findings of researchers, the majority of those responsible for the violence are criminal gangs that are dedicated to the theft of petroleum. The competition between these gangs for control of the territory and access to oil pipelines drives them to compete with one another.
Cartels such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel are both active in the state of Mexico. Both of these cartels have been devoting an increasing amount of their resources to the theft of oil, which they subsequently sell on the underground market.
